Golf Course Superintendents are constantly looking for ways to reduce the amount of water needed to sustain healthy turf. The serious lack of rainfall in California, Nevada and Arizona, as well as other parts of the US is predicted to worsen in the coming years. According to a controlled study conducted at Olds College, a long established agricultural institution located in Alberta, Canada, innovative solutions for golf course upkeep can benefit the whole golf industry. The study of the use of magnetized irrigation treatment on Kentucky Bluegrass turf realized a 20% reduction in the amount of water needed to sustain healthy turf. An estimated 2.08 billion gallons of water per day are required to irrigate golf courses in the United States. Based on this estimate 151,840 billion gallons of water could be saved annually by using quality magnetized water treatment. Although the effects of this treatment (known as Magnation Water Treatment) can be considered for a variety of agricultural industries the Olds College study specifically focused on turfgrass and golf courses.

Stunning results - Dean Piller, Superintendent of Cordova Bay Golf Course on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, was skeptical at first but after having run some informal tests, he realized the huge savings and arranged to have a Magnation pump station installed at his two golf courses. “The results were really impressive,” said Dean, who went on to say, “Our daily irrigation run times were 80,000 gallons less per night, a 2.5 million gallons savings in water per month.” Apart from the 20% savings in irrigation requirements it also enhanced the soil chemistry. Inspired by the success of their magnation systems the superintendent and his staff at Cordova Bay Golf Course are currently undertaking a major reno to replace all existing sprinkler heads, adding small magnets called turf bolts to assist with infiltration and to help provide better uniformity and consistency on the greens.
